Laurens Speelman (Flow Traders)
After my Finance Master’s in Groningen, I set eyes on becoming a trader. My father has been an oil trader and he often told me about the market dynamics. He explained to me how various market participants have an influence on commodity prices and how he determined his position in these markets. The challenge to outsmart others is something he passed on to me.
After going to an in-house day at Flow Traders, the atmosphere and energy on the trading floor immediately grasped my attention. Even after working here for over two years, that feeling never left me.
Flow Traders mainly deals in Exchange Traded Funds (ETF’s). ETF’s are baskets of stocks that track certain indexes, such as the AEX Index or the S&P 500. Since modern stock exchanges are all electronic, we use models and algorithms to trade these ETF’s. A trader’s job is to develop, monitor and enhance these models.
Most of us have an economic or beta background at university level and we all have a strong numerical aptitude. We at Flow Traders have a passion for financial markets, are highly competitive and thrive under pressure. We take on calculated risks and review our decisions in hindsight.
We are teamed up in desks of about 3-4 people, every desk has a specific area that it covers. We are given a wide range of tools and a lot of freedom to create and advance our trading book. On a daily base we review with analysts, heads of trading and other colleagues. We enhance our various strategies and try to come up with new ones. There is enough space to develop our own path at Flow Traders.
With trading offices in Europe, the US and Asia, we cover all time zones. Our global, around the clock market coverage brings us significant benefits in terms of economies of scale. It also allows stronger risk management and more efficient and effective hedging.
Over time I have learned to make split-second decisions that are backed up by previous experiences. I have find myself growing as a trader. My colleagues are young, dynamic and all have a winner’s mentality. It feels good to be a part of an enthusiastic team. Being a trader at Flow Traders, I can’t imagine doing something else. Every day presents new hurdles but also new opportunities. Every day I get a little better. The excitement and adrenaline are unique to this job.
